Portugal was at war with Holland and was striving to expel the Dutch from the territiry they occupied in the state of Pernabuco (Recife). The supremacy of the Dutch navy was beyond question: but naval supremacy is useless the enemeyfleet puts to sea. The Portuguese stayed anchored in "All Saiints Bay", but, in September 1648, for no apparent reason, three galleons set for the open sea. As soon as the Dutcht heard of this, seven ships under de With`s command left Recife to find the Portuguese Ships. They met off at Itaparíca.

The critical point in the batthe was the encounter between the Dutch ships"UTRECHT" and "HUYS NASSAU" and the Portugueses man-of-war "NOSSA SENHORA DO ROSÁRIO".

The  Portuguese Captain, finding his vessel flanked on boty sides by Ducht ships, faithfully obeyed his King`s instructions for such a situation and blew up both ships, with the whole crew onboard. In the arithmetic of war, Portugal lost one ship rather than being captured, but Holland lost two.

Whe the smoke from the tremendous explosion dispersed , only "HUYS NASSAU" remained afloat, but burning fierceLY. THE " ROSÁRIO" disappearedcompltly. Only one man survivede. The "UTRECHT" had also blown up. Twenty six men survived, including the Capitain. "HUYS NASSAU" was soon abandodoned by her crew, no doubt terrified they would soon suffer the same fate as the other two ships. From the wreckage of the UTRECHT found 330 years later, it can be assumed that the explosion sheered off the ster which then settled fairly intact.
